(28 Feb 2003) SHOTLIST/SCRIPT
NASA RELEASES COLUMBIA CREW FLIGHT-DECK VIDEO
The video was taken by shuttle crew members as Columbia reentered the Earth’s atmosphere on February 1. The videotape was recovered on February 6 near Palestine, Texas, during search and recovery efforts after the tragedy.
The video is about 13 minutes long and shows flight deck activity beginning as Columbia passes over the south central Pacific Ocean at an altitude of approximately 500-thousand feet. It continues as Columbia moves over the eastern Pacific Ocean, southwest of the San Francisco Bay area.
The video ends approximately, 11 minutes prior to loss of signal between the orbiter and Mission Control.
Commander Rick Husband, Pilot Willie McCool and Mission Specialists Kalpana Chawla and Laurel Clark are seen on the flight deck during reentry. In the video, they can be heard conversing among themselves and working through routine checklist activities with flight controllers in Mission Control.
Mission Specialists Mike Anderson and Dave Brown and Payload Specialist Ilan Ramon were on Columbia’s mid-deck during reentry.
The video was shot with a small onboard camera mounted to the right of McCool, who then removes it and hands it to Clark for additional filming.
All material will be as incoming and will be NASA TV

  • Shout out to the cameraman who managed to survive with only a little headache!

Out of 135 missions, there were two fatal accidents. That's only a 1.48% accident rate. That's a pretty amazing friggin' safety record!

  • The dude from Israel was a hero he was the youngest pilot to leave Israel and head for Iraq to blow up Saddams nuclear ambitions in modified F15s and his life ended here and he will always be remembered.PS I’m not Jewish I’m Irish I read this about him a while back if saddam got his way we were all in trouble love from Ireland.

  • There's always an investigation. Always a culprit that should have been caught years before the accident. Always no one held accountable. Meanwhile seven people are dead because they trusted the government to look out for them. And no one ever held accountable.

If this is how the government treats people it deems heros, what chance does the average American have of trusting the government to look out for them!?

It's kind of frustrating that she has to explain every moment when it's not necessary. They could be communicating vital information but she's explaining everything! *I don't have my gloves on yet * teehee

  • RIP 🙏🙏

  • OMG 😱. I know they were scared. I would have been ‼️🤔 very haunting to say the least 💔

  • Very sad 😞

It’s really spooky that these people are about to die

The damage was visible on the launch video. Its sad that they didn't examine the launch video BEFORE they attempted re-entry. They could have repaired the hole.

Missing tapes…….AGAIN! Such a convenient excuse for the government. Still doing it today. Pathetic.

  • mishap? speak the truth.

  • To all the people with a " They died in pain!"- fetish, check the report. They didn't even have time to pull their visors down ( turning on emergency O2). Also, this isn't Challenger.

  • May they rest in peace…

  • I have always wondered before the final events happen, if the pilots knew what was going on and was aware of the gravity of the situation? Besides ground control, if anybody would have known it would have been them. 😞

Did the crew know what they were doing ?

  • who believes that the video tape survived but the shuttle disintegrated?? This is just like the 911 passports that magically got found!

They finally understood what was happening, less than a minute before incineration.

I read that NASA knew they were doomed the moment they took off, would it have been the right thing to tell them I don't know, perhaps it's best just to live in the moment and not know!!!🤔🇬🇧

The disaster happened when my mum and dad got married at 2003

  • It was shot down, period,NASA is full of sh,t, always have been 🤬they shot it down!!

  • 5.27 o, shit??? R.Husband?

  • Safey SmithMay 4, 2022Reply

I mean no disrespect, but the woman whose voice you can hear (Laurel Clark I guess?) was talking far too much and providing an unnecessary distraction for those who needed to concentrate.
There was nothing that could have helped them to survive at this point anyway, but she was sitting back and yapping away while the pilot and copilot needed to be concentrating.
    She certainly wasn’t helping.

  • My only question. What space shuttle was this and what happened to it?

  • From a tv documentary:
Captain says "check your suit for pressure" because he know that the light flares are starting up soon than usual and he's thinking there may be a big problem coming and to have their suits pressurized or oxygenated. What they're seeing at first is the tire well and wing on fire then the friction burn which is normal. Alarms are going off at NASA.
🕊God Bless All These Space Adventurers and Heroes🕊🇺🇸

Same morons as the Flat Earth,Elvis, and of course Moon Landing deniers! 🤣🤣🤣

  • I have deepest sympathies for US astronauts but do not regret Kalpana's death because she was an Indian.
